Wow!  Y'all did it.  You walked, you talked, you rang door bells,you stood on street corners and waved,you post on Facebook and blogs, you handed out literature, you donated money, you donated time, but most importantly you voted!  The outcome of this election is yours - not mine.  I am so honored and proud of every single one of you who did your part to make this victory.  As you know my opponents launched a ruthless and relentlessness attach on me. The campaign against me by the good ole boys was one of the worst I have witnessed in a campaign in the City of Pensacola.  We took the high ground. We delivered a message to the voters that was honest, simple and true.  Now it is time to continue the work we are passionate about - creating transparent and accountable government, defending the right of citizens to redress their grievances to the government, creating an equal distribution of city resources and especially in poor neighborhoods such as the Sanders Street and Burgess Road area of District 2, spending our LOST funds and Restore Funds to address long standing problems of drainage and infrastructure, creating safe walking routes to the three public schools in District  2, promoting our Uptown businesses and communities.  This is an exciting and challenging time for us.  Again,  I cannot express in words my gratitude to all of you. Just know this - I hear you.

I am now and always will be your city council watchdog.

HAYWARD CON GAME !!

1. ( oops,here i go again being "antagonistic" as my opponents like to characterize me.

CON GAME:  Mayor Ashton Hayward's editorial in today's paper is just a con game. His attempt to con the voter's into believing the city council has independent staff that does the bidding of the council (the legislative branch of the government) is shameful. I have served on city council for four years. I have a 100% perfect attendance record. I have not been asleep for four years. When Ashton Hayward claims the city council has a staff that cost the taxpayers $160,000.00, what he isn't telling the public is this fact - he hires them, they work for him, he can fire them. Whoever they are at any particular point in time one of their functions is to push the Mayor's agenda and to lobby city council members. This is not called democracy - it is called "dictatorship" .I don't believe this is what the citizens want. The most important issue facing the city government (other than federal grand jury investigations for bribery and corruption) is the power of the legislative body to have control over the hiring and firing of its staff. Read more about the charter amendment that you will be asked to vote for in my previous blog post on this matter. Please be aware that there are several councilmembers who do not support the charter amendment allowing council to hire its own staff because those individuals benefit for having unfettered access to a powerful Mayor - with concentration of power in the executive branch that will do their bidding . Firefighters Back Sherri

Firefighters endorsed Councilwoman Sherri Myers for re-election of the Pensacola City Council. I am please to announced that the Pensacola Professional Firefighters Local 707 has endorsed me. I am humbled and honored by their endorsement. I love our firefighters. I will forever hold them dear in my heart for the kindness they showed my mother after she had her stroke. There were a number of times I had to call them for assistance - I don't know what I would have done without them. One of the main reasons I chose to live in the City of Pensacola is because we have professional firefighters. Our fire fighters serve the citizens in many ways, not just fighting fires that endanger their lives. They are our first responders in emergencies. They deserve our support and appreciate. The City Council is the governing body of the City of Pensacola, per the City Charter.  There are two branches of government in the City – the Legislative branch which is the City Council and the Executive branch.

CHECKS & BALANCES

Under the US Constitution and the Florida Constitution the members of the legislative branch of government have the IMPLIED POWER to hire and fire their own staff. President Obama does not hire and fire the staff of members of Congress.  Governor Rick Scott does not hire and fire the staff of members of the Florida legislature.  In contrast, in the City of Pensacola the current City mayor hires and fires all staff that perform work for the City Council. This has led to domination and control over the city’s legislative body by the executive branch – a practice that is inconsistent in a Republic form of government where a balance of power is necessary to ensure transparency and accountability in government.

 

In order for the city council to legislate, make policies and have budgetary oversight of the city’s funds, the council must have the ability to hire and fire its own staff. To ensure that the City Council can make independent and informed decisions it is necessary to amend the City Charter to expressly provide that the City Council has a duty, responsibility and authority to hire and fire its staff.

Finally, Dear Voter - Do I want to be re-elected to City Council? You bet I do!  But, what is more important is that you vote “yes” to amend the charter, expressly allowing the council to hire its own staff and preventing any future mayors from dominating, controlling and manipulating the city council for his or her own agenda and that of their powerful friends.

I have been honored to represent you on the city council for four years.  I believe I have earned your trust:

·      I am not influenced by money and special interest. (Check out the campaign contributions of local politicians and those running for office - go to-  EscambiaVotes.com.)

·      I’ve made “NO”  secret backroom deals with the 7^th floor of city hall

·       Consistently voted against wasteful spending, putting needs above wants and political favoritism – like expensive out of town ad agencies rather than sidewalks for school kids.

·       Defended the people’s City Charter in court when the Mayor ordered employees not to talk to City council members.  We the People won.

·       Consistently worked for our district’s fair share of Local Option Sales Tax funds, tree beautification, road resurfacing, drainage and much more.

·       Consistently worked for traffic calming, sidewalks along Burgess Road, stop signs, and complete streets with shared lanes for bicycles and pedestrians.

·       Consistently worked for our Uptown area with its great commercial district, Sacred Heart Hospital, Pensacola International Airport, Pensacola State College and neighborhoods.

·       Restored the city’s Environmental Advisory Board and worked for good environmental practices, protection of beloved trees and Carpenter Creek.

·       Working to assure BP oil funds are used for infrastructure projects such as drainage and storm water.
